The first new Knights of Columbus Council for the 2009-10 Fraternal Year was formed on a very special day: the Celebration of the Birthday of our Founder, Father Michael J McGivney (August 12).
This happy occasion occurred in Naples, FL, in the Parish of St. Peter the Apostle. On that evening, the District Deputy Marcel Seamples (District 48) made the announcement that the Pastor Rev. Gerald Gritch and the Most Reverend Frank J. Dewane, Bishop of the Diocese of Venice, had given him a Form 100 to transfer their memberships to the new yet to be named Council. At that moment, the number needed to form the Council was six. In anticipation of the formation of the Council, our State Deputy, SK Douglas J. Murray, brought General Agent Brent Labreche and PSD Jose L. Jimenez, Supreme Council Hispanic Development Field Coordinator. They were joined by the Spanish First Degree Team coordinated by Lorenzo Rodriguez, Spanish and Multi Cultural Membership Development Director. He was accompanied by DD Eddy Moreira, and Brothers Eddy Tigerino, Genaro Brito and Rafael Lopez (who had taken his first degree three weeks ago).
The six candidates who received their first degree were welcomed into the Council by 10 Brother Knights who took their first degree on July 8, 2009. A degree also exemplified by the team from Miami.
After the exemplification, DD Marcel Seamples announced that the new Council was now complete and that he and Brother Jose Jimenez would prepare the papers to send them to the Supreme Office. Brother Victor Lopez who took his degree on July 8, 2009, asked the members of the new Council to look around to the officers of the State Council and see how proud they were of wearing the Knights emblem, how they all had their membership cards and that they carried their rosaries with them; he added: “We need to start acting like Knights.”
When the District Deputy asked if they were prepared to give a name to the Council, it was said that the goal of this Council should be to be the initial home for the Spanish Speaking Knights of Naples. At that point our State Deputy asked: “What do you think of naming this Council Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe?” No one spoke; the new members stood up and started to applaud. The name had been decided!
Brother Lorenzo Rodriguez announced that this was the 30th Spanish Speaking Council in Florida; District Deputy Marcel Seamples added: “This Council was born on the Celebration of the Birthday of our Founder, Father Michael J. McGiveney!”
