A Celebration of Remembrance of the dastardly terrorist Attack of 9-11 was conducted in Flagler Beach, Florida on September 11, 2009.
Those whose sacrifices that were noted included members of the Armed Forces of the United States, immediate Responders to include the valiant emergency medical personnel, the fire departments, local police personnel and the many non-uniformed people who assisted or attempted to assist others to escape the destruction, often at the risk or expense of their own safety and lives.
The celebration was sponsored by the Notre Dame Council, 10514 and Corpus Christi Assembly, 2810. Notable State Officers included; our Worthy State Deputy, Douglas Murray; State Program Director, Chris Kernnan and his lovely wife Denise; St. Augustine Public Relations Coordinator, John Shierling and his lovely wife Sue; State Church Activities Director, Jim McCue and other State Officials including the district deputies for districts 14 and 16.
The activities were in the very capable hands of Sir Knight Anthony Wade, John Sabia, Faithful Navigator, Grand Knight Mike Arrato and our chaplain of the council, Fr. Al Esposito.
Attending organizations included; VFW,DAV,Flagler County Sheriff, Brother Don Fleming, Chief Deputy Rick Look, Sheriff’s Honor Guard, Mayor of Flagler Beach, the Honorable Alice Baker, Mayor of Palm Coast, the Honorable Jon Netts, Flagler Beach’s Chief of Police and Fire Department.
Attendees were escorted to the end of the Flagler Beach City Pier. Subsequent to a welcome by SK Wade, the State Deputy said a short remark followed by a benediction by Father Al. Memorial wreaths were then tossed into the sea at the time the airplanes struck the Twin Towers in NYC. A parade led by the KofC Color Corps then processed to the Santa Maria del Mar Church for Mass at 11 AM. Father Al gave a very moving eulogy, there was not a dry eye in the church as he exhorting everyone to “never forget” the sacrifices made by our valiant citizens in the face of danger and catastrophe.
I would like to take this opportunity to express the appreciation of the Knights of Columbus for their efforts to attend this “remembrance.” Attendees including the aforementioned included Grand Knights of Councils 7845, 11961 and Color Corps from Assemblies 0165,0166 2264,2810and 2901.
