Special Olympics Fall Classic
Please put OCT, 30 and 31 on your calendar if you live anywhere near Disney World and volunteer for the Fall Classic. If we could guarantee 100 volunteers, we could all be together and sponsor the Bowling competitions. You can give 3 or 4 hours, or Fri. afternoon, or all day Saturday! Grand Knights, please get a group together (wives & teens count as members) and send one application for all. Fall Classic includes: bowling, gymnastics, power lifting, roller skating, softball and softball skills.
Special Olympic Fall Classic Website
- Special Olympics is much more than just sports.
A. education , follow directions, obey rules
B. develop socially acceptable behavior & a healthy lifestyle
C. develop leadership and speaking skills, create job opportunities - The Supreme Council recognized the fact that Special Olympics is the best nation- wide program working with the mentally challenged population of all ages and levels of ability. They have partnered with SO for years and have asked all Councils to get involved both as donors and volunteers.
- The best way to learn more about the extent of the program and the activities in your own area is to visit their website, www.sofl.org. Easy to remember -so = special Olympics, fl = Florida. org. Just click on your county & get the name of a local coordinator, calendar of events, etc. Volunteers are always needed for single events, to mentor an individual, or include in some of your Council sports like bowling or softball.
- The best way to get credit for your Council’s donations and volunteer hours is to go through the Handicapped Drive and fill in Form #4584, Partnership Profile Report. I hope at least part of the money raised from your Tootsie Roll drive would go to Special Olympics. You don’t have to have a special fund raiser. You can give to SOFL, (the State organization,) or your County program.
- Our State Council sponsors the State Fall and Summer Games. There is no charge to any of the athletes to compete in these Games. We need lots of volunteers for these competitions. There are hundreds of events and all are paired with people of similar skills. All who enter any event on the local level receive a ribbon for trying. The top three competitors receive a gold, silver, or bronze medal and become eligible to compete against other counties in a regional meet. The same procedure applies and the winners then become eligible to go to the State Games, and perhaps make Team USA.
